Real history
Gold was found in the Jicarilla Mountains in the late 1870s; the camp grew to 4,000 with four newspapers, two hotels, a bank and Starr's Opera House (1882). Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett passed through. Local businesses demanded high prices for right-of-way, so the railroad ran through Carrizozo instead; by the late 1890s the mines were exhausted. When it was listed on the National Register in 1970, only six buildings qualified as contributing (Wikipedia).
