Real history
Englishman Henry Pye found silver chloride in 1879 and was killed by Apaches soon after staking his claim; by late 1881 the town had 500 people and eight saloons. It reached nearly 3,000 in 1890, then declined with silver prices after the 1893 repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act (Wikipedia). Wikipedia's Chloride article dates the end of government silver purchases to 1896. The town fell to 300 by 1905 and 46 by 1946. It has only a few residents, though some original buildings are preserved (Wikipedia).
