About Spook Atlas

Spook Atlas is a map of haunted, abandoned and historic places, with a page for each one that sets out its documented history alongside the ghost stories told about it.

How we source

Every historical fact on a place page links to the source it came from, such as a newspaper, a government agency, a museum or a history organization. When sources disagree, we show both. If we cannot verify a claim, we leave it out.

Legends are folklore

Ghost stories are presented as claims that people have made, not as facts. Each one cites where the claim was reported, and the creepiness score (1 to 5 skulls) is our own rating of the story, not evidence that anything happened.

No safety or legal judgments

Spook Atlas does not judge whether a place is safe or legal to visit, and we do not give directions or tips on getting in. Access notes repeat what an owner or operator says publicly, with the date we last checked, or say that access is unverified. Always check with the owner or operator before you go. We do not encourage trespassing.

Photos

We only use photos that are public domain or openly licensed, with credit to the photographer and license. If we cannot find one, the page has no photo.
