Real history
Gold was found on Tuerto Creek in 1825, the first gold rush west of the Mississippi. Golden was formed in 1879 and absorbed two earlier camps, gaining saloons, a school and a stock exchange. Mining continued on a small scale until about 1892, and when the post office closed in 1928 Golden officially became a ghost town. Its 1918 general store still operates, and the 2020 census counted 19 people (Wikipedia).
