Real history
Placer mining began in 1866 and the town, named for the daughter of Fort Union commander William H. Moore, was New Mexico's first incorporated town. It may have held 5,000 to 9,000 people in 1869 and became the first Colfax County seat in 1870, but fell to about 100 by 1872. A 1903 fire destroyed most of the wooden town, and by 1917 few lived there; a small group of ranch homes stands on the site today (Wikipedia).
