Real history
By tradition the corner has held an inn since the city's founding; the hotel ties this to a 1607 founding (La Fonda), while Santa Fe is conventionally dated to 1610. The NPS says the earlier Exchange Hotel was demolished in 1919 during a WWI victory bond rally, when a small tank knocked down its adobe walls for each $100 bond sold (National Park Service). Isaac Hamilton Rapp designed the Pueblo Revival building, the Santa Fe Railway bought it in 1925, and the Fred Harvey Company ran it as a Harvey House (Wikipedia).
Sources differ: Wikipedia and Historic Hotels of America say the earlier hotel burned in 1912 (Wikipedia); this page follows the hotel's own account and the NPS, which describe its 1919 demolition (La Fonda).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
The Santa Fe New Mexican's Pasatiempo reported in 2020 that director of rooms Becky Ortiz saw a woman in white walk through the front desk, a ghost staff call The Bride, and later heard spurs behind her on the mezzanine. Gift shop manager Linda Troynak said a soft voice called her name in 2015; director of engineering John Nuanez and housekeeping director Mary Nuanez described the same, and director of sales Ed Pulsifer described elevator doors opening and closing on their own during the pandemic shutdown.
