Real history
The Pacific Reclamation Company bought 40,000 acres in 1910 and built a dam on Bishop Creek, and the ruins of the hotel and school and a cemetery are all that remain (Wikipedia).
The company was granted only about half of the water rights it had sought. In 1912 downstream water users led by the Union Canal Ditch Co. sued, and a judge barred it from using Humboldt River waters in irrigation season (Nevada Lawyer, 2016).
