Real history
The Nevada Northern Railway was built in 1905–06, primarily to reach a major copper-producing area in White Pine County, running about 140 miles north from Ely (Wikipedia).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
In 2019 The Ely Times printed stories gathered by the railroad foundation's executive director. One staff member described a man in overalls walking into the dark boiler shop, voices and tool sounds across the engine house, and a figure walking through steam when no one else was in the building. Source: The Ely Times, 2019.
The same staff accounts describe the shape of a small child in Coach 5 and a boot found 20 feet from where it was left in the paint barn. Source: The Ely Times, 2019. The railroad began public haunted walking tours that year (The Ely Times, 2019).
