Real history
Mormon settlers founded Chesterfield in 1881 along a route of the Oregon Trail. After a railroad was built through Bancroft and farming grew hard, the town declined. Its meeting house, amusement hall, tithing house and cemetery remain. It was listed on the National Register in 1980 as a district of 41 buildings and eight sites. It is now run as a tourist attraction with guided tours and a museum (Wikipedia). Its National Register nomination says the town was mostly deserted by 1941, when the school closed (NRHP nomination).
