Real history
The Spokesman-Review (2005) reported that the Oasis opened in 1895 as a hotel and saloon. It reported that the women who worked there left in haste ahead of a federal investigation in January 1988, and that curator Michelle Mayfield had then run it as a museum for 13 years (Spokesman-Review, 2005).
Most sources date the closing to January 1988: historian Heather Branstetter writes that "the Oasis shut down in January of 1988" (Heather Branstetter, A Business Doing Pleasure); Clio and Atlas Obscura also give January 1988 (Clio; Atlas Obscura); and Wikivoyage says January 1988 is the last recorded date in the house's hotel registry (Wikivoyage). Clio adds that the building was sold in 1993 and opened as a museum later that year. Two university history sites give June 23, 1988 instead (Spokane Historical; Intermountain Histories). Separately, the Spokesman-Review reported a federal gambling raid on about 50 Shoshone County establishments on June 23, 1991 (Spokesman-Review, 1997).
In 2025, the paper wrote that makeup still sits on the vanities and grocery lists are still pinned to the fridge, calling it "an accidental time capsule" (Spokesman-Review, 2025).
