Real history

Built in 1857, it is the oldest brick structure in Southern California. It was the Whaley family home and at times a general store, the county courthouse and San Diego's first commercial theater (Wikipedia).

San Diego Magazine reports that Thomas Whaley bought the site in 1855 where thief Yankee Jim Robinson had been hanged in 1852, an execution Whaley witnessed. It also says that his son Thomas Jr. died in the house in 1858 and his daughter Violet in 1885, and that the house became a museum in 1960 (San Diego Magazine).

The museum says the Whaleys reported heavy footsteps upstairs soon after moving in, and that Thomas Whaley believed they were Yankee Jim's. It claims visitors still report footsteps, a shadowy man and a choking feeling in the courtroom. Source: Whaley House Museum.
