Real history
Four mining companies opened copper mines in the Dragoon Mountains in 1908–09, and a tent city grew almost overnight. The post office opened on March 13, 1909, and the town peaked at about 2,000 people (Wikipedia).
Profits shrank within ten years, and a "mass exodus" took place in 1921, though the post office stayed open until September 30, 1942. The jail, built in June 1909, is the only complete structure still standing (Wikipedia). Ruins of the Big Rock Store and the Great Western Copper Company office buildings also remain (GleesonArizona.com).
