Real history
Charleston housed workers for the Millville mills across the San Pedro River, which processed Tombstone silver ore. After the Tombstone mines flooded in 1886 the mills shut, and the earthquake of May 3, 1887, left its adobe buildings in ruins. The post office closed on October 24, 1888, and by 1889 Charleston was already a ghost town (Wikipedia).
During World War II, soldiers from Fort Huachuca used the ruins for urban-combat practice, often with live ammunition. Only a few adobe ruins remain, within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (Wikipedia).
