Real history

T.B. Potter began building the resort in 1906, and the first lots sold in 1907. A north jetty was built from 1914 to 1917, the road opened in 1928. A jetty extension in 1933 was followed by erosion and a breach of the spit (Oregon Encyclopedia).

Bayocean historian Jerry Osborn writes that the natatorium closed to the public in 1927 and never reopened, and that erosion undercut it until it collapsed in 1932 (Bayocean.net).

The post office closed in 1953 (Oregon Encyclopedia). The last house fell to the sea in 1960; the often-cited date of February 15, 1960 is when a photo of it was taken, not when it fell (Bayocean.net). The county now manages Bay Ocean Spit as a park (Oregon Encyclopedia).
