Real history
Founded in 1880 near a Birch Stage Line stop, Steins depended on the Southern Pacific, which brought in all its water. The rock quarry closed in 1925 (Legends of America). The railroad ended its stop and water deliveries by 1944, offering residents free transport out; most left their houses and possessions behind, and a later fire destroyed much of what remained. Owners who bought it in 1988 ran tours until 2011, when Larry Link was murdered and the tours stopped (Wikipedia).
