Facts below are drawn from the linked sources.

Approximate area. The map shows only a rough area for this place, not an exact location.

Real history

Frank Worden and Christopher Higgins founded Hell Gate in 1860 on the Mullan Road. It became the seat of Missoula County, held Montana's first county election in 1861 and its first trial in 1862, and was later abandoned (Wikipedia).

Sources differ: Frank Woody's 1877 county history, quoted in the Montana Law Review, and the Missoulian place the first trial in March 1862 (Montana Law Review; Missoulian); an Old Missoula account dates a Hell Gate trial to 1864 (Old Missoula).
