Real history
The Old Prison served as the Montana Territorial Prison from 1871 and as the state's main prison until it was retired in September 1979. In 1959 inmates led by Jerry Myles and Lee Smart held it for 36 hours before the National Guard retook it (Wikipedia).
Ghost stories

In 2021 KPAX reported that Ghost Hunts USA planned a series of overnight investigations at the prison, and co-founder Tyler Evans called it one of the company's favorite places to visit. Source: KPAX, 2021.
