Troops withdrew in 1853 and the buildings were auctioned two years later; the Army returned during the Civil War, left in October 1865, came back to guard railroad construction when the Post of Southeast Kansas was created on January 14, 1870, and withdrew for good in spring 1873 (NPS). Restoration began under an act of August 31, 1965, and it became a national historic site on October 19, 1978 (Wikipedia).
