Real history
The Consolidation Coal Company built Buxton after buying land in 1900 and recruited many Black miners from the South. Mining declined, a 1916 fire sped the exodus, and by 1927 no residents were left; the site was listed on the National Register in 1983 (Wikipedia). A few foundations remain in farmland (CBS2 Iowa, 2025).
