Facts below are drawn from the linked sources.

Real history

George C. Nimmons designed the building for Reid, Murdoch & Co., and it was built in 1914. On July 24, 1915, it served as a makeshift hospital after the Eastland capsized across the river (Wikipedia); CBS Chicago says one of the makeshift morgues was also set up there (CBS Chicago, 2021). The disaster killed 844 people (Wikipedia); WBEZ says about 600 bodies were taken to the Second Regiment Armory, the main temporary morgue (WBEZ, 2016).
