Real history
Geologist Sylvester Richardson found silver near the forks of the Crystal River in 1874, and Crystal City was incorporated in 1881. In the mid-1880s it had over 500 residents, a newspaper, a men's club, saloons and hotels. It was all but abandoned by 1917; many buildings stand and its few residents live there only in summer (Wikipedia).
