Real history
Jerome B. Wheeler, co-owner of Macy's, built the hotel in 1889 during the silver boom; it was Aspen's only hotel through the city's "quiet years" and was listed on the National Register in 1986 (Wikipedia). The hotel's own site also dates its opening to 1889 (Hotel Jerome).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
The Aspen Times reported in 2012 that, allegedly, a 10-year-old boy staying in Room 310 drowned in the hotel pool in 1936, and that employees and guests say they have met him on the third floor, wet and in a towel. It also told of Katie Kerrigan, a maid in 1892 who died of pneumonia after falling through pond ice; workers report beds made before staff arrived. Source: Aspen Times, 2012.
