Real history
The Hotel Léger is one of the oldest operating hotels in California; the hotel and courthouse building are California Historical Landmark #663 (Wikipedia).
The Lodi News-Sentinel (2012) wrote that George Léger began it in 1851 as a wood-framed tent and that one of its three buildings was the Calaveras County Courthouse from 1855 to 1866 (Lodi News-Sentinel).
Sources differ on the founding: the Calaveras Heritage Council says Alexis Yocht and Jean Ducouytres opened it in 1851 as the Hotel de France and that Léger bought in in 1853 (Calaveras Heritage Council).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
The News-Sentinel reported guest and staff claims of Léger wandering Room 7, a woman crying for her child in Room 2, a child by the fireplace in Room 3, and beds in Rooms 10 and 11 found messed after being made. A former owner said he saw smoke and fire in the bar with no fire present. Source: Lodi News-Sentinel, 2012.
