Real history
The Los Angeles Times (2025) wrote that in February 1929 owner Ned Doheny was shot and killed by his secretary Hugh Plunkett, who then shot himself; the motive was never established. Doheny's widow lived there until 1955, and the city of Beverly Hills later bought it, making the house an event venue and the grounds a park (Los Angeles Times).
