Real history

Miners built a furnace, a pipeline and hoists at a camp first called Signal, and by 1908 the Clara Gold and Copper Mining Company had made it its headquarters. The census counted 400 people in 1910 and 337 in 1920 (Wikipedia).

Copper prices fell after World War I, the post office closed on June 28, 1924, and the mines shut down by 1937. Wikipedia says the BLM now manages the site and has restored roofs on some miners' quarters (Wikipedia).

Sources differ on its size: some accounts give a peak of about 750 people, which Wikipedia says is hard to confirm (Wikipedia).
