Real history
The town was laid out after coal was found in Spring Canyon in 1912 and peaked at about 550 people. In 1922 striking miners attacked a train and a mine guard was killed (Wikipedia).
On February 6, 1930, a gas explosion in the Standard mine killed 20 of the 29 men underground (Wikipedia). A U.S. Bureau of Mines summary puts the total at 23: gas ignited by a mining machine, spread by coal dust, killed 20, and a roof fall killed 3 of a fresh-air crew on February 7 (U.S. Bureau of Mines).
The mine shut in 1950 and the last families left in the 1970s (Wikipedia).
