Real history
The Tennessee State Library and Archives summarizes the legend: a spirit tormented John Bell's family in Robertson County from about 1817 and was blamed for his death in 1820 (Tennessee State Library and Archives). The cave sits on land once farmed by the Bells (Bell Witch Cave).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
State archives describe knocking, voices and attacks on Betsy Bell attributed to a spirit called "Kate"; the cave's owners run tours of the cave and a replica cabin and say the spirit is still felt there. Sources: TSLA; Bell Witch Cave.
