Real history
Settlers filed the first claims in the gulch in March 1876; most became silver mines. A 1883 court fight over two claims and the killing of Patrick Gorman helped start a decline; after a brief revival in 1886 the town was very inactive until 1897, when the Union Mining Company bought the mines and failed within a year. The Burlington Railroad revived Galena in 1902, Gilt Edge Mines did so again in 1940, and the school closed in 1943. Wikipedia notes a few families still live in the area (Wikipedia).
