Real history
Polish immigrants opened the White Eagle in 1905. McMenamins' historians found no record of a brothel: the 1920 Census shows nine Polish men living upstairs. They confirm that police raided it on June 18, 1906, during a scare over an alleged anarchist plot. The basement vault door was added in the 1970s (McMenamins, 2019).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
Sam Worek, who lived upstairs and arrived in New York on June 27, 1905, is blamed for a ghost that supposedly half-pushed, half-carried a server down the basement stairs in the 1990s. People also claim to see a face at a second-floor window and feel a chill in Room #2. Source: McMenamins blog, 2018.
