Real history
Gold Hill was founded in 1859 and became a major Comstock mining and milling center, with mines such as the Yellow Jacket, Crown Point and Kentuck (Wikipedia).
HistoryNet calls the Gold Hill Hotel Nevada's oldest operating hotel (HistoryNet). Carson Now says it was first known as the Riesen House and ties its lore to the April 7, 1869 Yellow Jacket Mine fire (Carson Now, 2018). At least 35 men died in that fire (HistoryNet); the exact total is unknown. Sources differ: Carson Now gives 35 to 40 and Visit Reno Tahoe gives 37 (Visit Reno Tahoe).
