Real history

The 1970 National Register nomination for the Brownville Historic District describes a brick Gothic Revival house erected for Benson M. Bailey in 1877, purportedly built earlier nearer the Missouri River and then taken apart and reassembled on its present site (NRHP nomination). It is a contributing building in that district.

The Brownville Historical Society says Bailey was a Civil War captain and that the seven-gabled house was disassembled in 1877 and moved brick by brick (Brownville Historical Society).

The society relates a local story that doors will not stay closed because Captain and Mrs. Bailey haunt the house, and KETV's 2023 road trip adds piano music heard late at night. Source: Brownville Historical Society; KETV, 2023, updated 2024.
