Real history

The mansion was finished in 1881. Harvey Vaile was tried in 1882 and 1883 over Star Route mail contracts (Jackson County Historical Society); the jury in the 1883 retrial found him and his co-defendants not guilty (Omaha Daily Bee, June 15, 1883). Sophia Vaile, believed to have stomach cancer, died at the home in February 1883 of a laudanum overdose while he was in Washington; some accounts say morphine (Jackson County Historical Society). He died in 1894 (Wikipedia).

KCTV says the house soon became a sanatorium, then a nursing home (KCTV, 2022); Wikipedia dates the sanatorium to 1908. The City of Independence acquired it in 1983 (Wikipedia).

Ghost stories

These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.

Sophia Vaile Our creepiness rating 💀💀💀💀💀
KCTV reported in 2022 that Sophia Vaile died suddenly of a laudanum overdose as her husband's trial was wrapping up, and that some paranormal groups claim to have communicated with her. Volunteers Charlie Beck and Sandy Dougherty told KCTV they had never witnessed anything strange ("Maybe the ghosts don't like me," Beck said), though other coverage quotes visitors and volunteers describing experiences.
