Real history
The caves, technically mines, were dug into the St. Peter sandstone from the 1840s and used for mushroom growing and storage. Josie and William Lehmann opened the Castle Royal nightclub there on October 26, 1933; it closed in the late 1930s. Stories of visits by John Dillinger and Ma Barker are unproven legend (Wikipedia).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
The Minnesota Daily reported in 2021 that guide Brett Williams said there would be whistling and footsteps, adding, "I've never seen ghosts so bold"; on the tour he told of flickering chandeliers and spirits seen walking through walls. Source: Minnesota Daily, 2021.
