Real history
Built to replace a hotel lost in an 1886 fire, the three-story Richardsonian Romanesque hotel opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1888, and was enlarged in 1899 and 1913. A 1944 fire destroyed floors in the south section; condemned in 1978, it reopened after two years of renovation (Wikipedia).
