Real history

Allan Morrison opened a trading post there in 1823. In the 1850s and 1860s Crow Wing was a county seat of 600 to 700 people, about half of them Ojibwe. The U.S. moved the Ojibwe to White Earth in 1868, and in 1871 the Northern Pacific crossed the river at Brainerd instead; by 1880 most residents had gone. The Beaulieu house was moved back to the site in 1988 (Wikipedia).
