Real history
The house was the residence of Sarah Winchester, widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. It became a tourist attraction nine months after her death in 1922 (Wikipedia).
The attraction says she bought an eight-room farmhouse and expanded it from 1886 to 1922 into a house of about 160 rooms (Winchester Mystery House).
Ghost stories
These are reported legends, not verified events. The creepiness score (1–5) is Spook Atlas's own editorial rating, not a measurement.
The attraction frames the famous questions as an unsolved mystery: whether a psychic told her to build, and whether she was haunted by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester rifles. It also promotes "reported paranormal activity" in the house. Source: Winchester Mystery House. History San Jose holds research material on her life. Source: History San Jose.
